Student Positions
Because of our department's commitment to the Student Financial Aid Program, first consideration is given, in some positions, to those applicants who have received an award through the Federal Work Study Program.
Each of the positions listed below require dedication to the following customer service actions:
- Engage members and guests at every opportunity
- Pick up trash throughout the recreational sports facilities
- Wear name tag at all times when on duty

Students are welcome to apply at anytime, but the Department of Recreational Sports is only currently hiring for open positions.
Open Positions- Winter Quarter
Housekeeping (must have Federal Work Study) - FWS #5002 Helps maintain a safe, clean environment for the recreational sports facilities. Responsible for day-to-day janitorial tasks and helping full-time employees with projects to maintain the recreation facilities.
Intramural Sports informational meeting winter quarter: Tuesday, January 6 5:30pm RPAC Meeting Rooms 1 & 2. For the sports of Basketball, Ice Hockey and Indoor Soccer. Please attend this meeting to be considered for a staff position for winter quarter. Please bring your class schedule and something to write with.
Intramural activity generally takes place 5:30-11:30pm Sunday-Thursday
Intramural Sports Official - FWS #3528 Officiates intramural sports during nightly contests. Training provided, and no previous officiating experience necessary. Interest in sports a plus, but not required. Must be hard-working and willing to learn new things, and enjoy working with people. May promote to supervisory position. Winter sports are ice hockey, basketball and indoor soccer.
Intramural Sports Scorekeeper/Monitor - FWS #3561 (must have Federal Work Study) Assists with the evening operation of the intramural sports program, which includes the checking in and out of intramural participants and equipment, keeping score of contests, as well as providing service to participants of the program.
Closed Positions
Adapted Recreational Sports Assistant - FWS # 3557 Supports instructor of adapted rec sports programs working with people with disabilities. Attends training to become a certified instructor. Maintains certifications in CPR, First Aid, AED. May promote to instructor or supervisory position.
Adventure Recreation Center - Recreation Supervisor FWS #3560 Enthusiastically greets members while checking their membership ID for entrance into the facility. Helps to keep facility in excellent condition while also providing great customer service to our members. Promotes safe and courteous behavior while enforcing facility regulations. This position may promote to Facility Manager position.
Age Group & Camps Program Instructor - FWS #3556 Instructs and leads youth and aging sports, swimming, and recreation programs. Creates program lesson plans. Follows department policies regarding safety, instruction, customer service, etc. Maintains department paperwork. May promote to supervisory position.
Aquatic Event Technician - FWS # 3653 Assist with set-up, tear-down and clean-up for large scale events such as varsity swim and dive meets, Olympic trials, age group swim and dive championships, etc. Assures cleanliness and working order of event equipment. Serves as liaison to event coaches, participants, officials, media and staff. Trouble shoots problems and emergency situations. Must be available weekends, evenings and early mornings as directed by event needs. Must be competent deep water swimmer. Must have current CPR-PR, First Aid, and AED certification. Aquatics Lifeguard - FWS #3553 Protects patron safety through preventive lifeguarding. Performs water rescues, first aid, CPR when necessary. Lifeguards may also assist in maintaining the safety and cleanliness of pools and pool areas, and assists with special events. Applicants must be currently certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid. May promote to supervisory position.
Aquatic Pool Technician - FWS #3535 (must have Federal Work Study) Pool Technicians must be able to consistently lift twenty-five pounds and be able to lift fifty pounds occasionally. Employees must be competent deep-water swimmers. This competency is demonstrated by retrieving a 10-pound diving brick from a pool 18 feet deep. All applicants must possess or show the willingness and ability to achieve certification in First Aid Basics, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Certified Pool/Spa Operator.
Provide a clean pool environment including pool decks, dive towers, pool surfaces, delivery areas and mechanical spaces. Assure water sanitation, chemical balance and clarity. Care for and maintain all pool related competitive, instructional, recreational, and mechanical equipment. Accurately test and record water quality parameters. Attend and assist in the conduct of special events, competitive events and facility rentals including set-up, take down and related cleaning. Recognize, identify, and communicate maintenance and operational concerns.
Athletic Trainer Aid: FWS #3567 (must have Federal Work Study) Work under the direction of a licensed Athletic Trainer to provide basic First Aid and treatment to recreational sport's members including but not limited to taping, icing, and injury and preventative treatments.
Fitness Program - Personal Trainer - FWS #3520 Assists with designing and implementing a personal fitness training program. Assists with staff training and development. Conducts one-on-one and group workout sessions. Creates and conducts specialty training clinics.
Fitness Program Assistant - FWS #3542 Provides safety, security and customer service within aerobics programs in various locations. Monitors instructor and participant needs. Sets up, takes down, inspects and maintains sound system and other equipment pieces. Checks ID's. Informs patrons of policies. May cross-train to be an aerobic instructor, personal trainer or fitness supervisor.

Graphic Design Assistant-Marketing - FWS #3538 Works with the graphic design leader to design effective materials such as short brochures, postcards, and collaborate on larger manuals and brochures. Student has an above average knowledge of various design software programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Microsoft Office Products). This student is required to be a Visual Communications major, Journalism Graphics major, or some other fine art specialization.

Marketing Assistant - FWS #3536 This position requires the individual to work with the marketing leader to assist in developing department printed materials, including newsletters (external and internal), press releases, web site content, flyers, and brochures. Will write, edit, and proofread copy for publications. Assists with the scheduling and planning of community/campus outreach events to meet department goals and target markets, including scheduling of mascot appearances. Provides back-up for other marketing functions in the day-to-day office operations. Experience in and knowledge of writing, editing, layout programs (i.e.-QuarkXpress, Adobe InDesign, PageMaker, Flash, etc.), printing, and the various methods of publishing is required.
Office Assistant Positions (must have Federal Work Study) Provides excellent customer service in person and by telephone to patrons and staff. Utilizes word processing and database programs. These positions require good oral and written communication skills. Experience in an office setting is preferred. We maintain student office assistant positions in several different areas as described below:
- Accounting/Clerical Office Assistant - FWS #2539 - Assists the accounting staff with typical duties like sorting, filing, and copying. Other duties include gathering and inputting data, reviewing and reconciling account activity, and assembling financial reports. Must be math proficient with experience using Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel. Basic knowledge of accounting is preferred. - Administrative Office Assistant - FWS #3543 - Assists with management of projects, web research, makes contacts with outside agencies, helps write reports, works independently, and enjoys solving problems. Computer troubleshooting experience a plus. - Assessment FWS #3541 - Enters data for department research/assessments. - Development/Fundraising - FWS #3555 - Assists development officer with patron contacts, organizing and conducting special events. - Intramural Sports - FWS #3527- Operates phones & office machines for busy office, prepares for intramural programs, and student payroll. - Maintenance - FWS # 3565 - Assist recreation department maintenance superintendent with filing, logging maintenance requests, computer data entry and answering the phone. - Outdoor Facilities - FWS #3533 - Assists sport programs at Fred Beekman Park, calculates payroll, and processes registrations. - Payroll Assistant - FWS #3551 - Assists with bi-weekly payroll, filing, and processing departmental requests. - Sport Clubs - FWS #3547- Assists in supervising sport club activity. Maintains directory of sport club officers, streamlines and organizes paperwork, and answers questions about sport clubs.
Outdoor Adventure Center Assistant - FWS #3548 - Works at the Outdoor Adventure Center located in the ARC. Assists patrons at the Climbing Center, reserves outdoor equipment, registers patrons for trips and clinics. Inspects outdoor rental equipment, performs minor repairs, provides general outdoor adventure information. Possesses good customer service skills. May promote to supervisory position.
Outdoor Recreational Facilities - Grounds Crew - FWS #3550 This position is from March to November, and if desired, may continue to work at the Adventure Recreation Center or Jesse Owens Recreation Centers during December through March. Contributes to a team of well skilled, dedicated, hard working staff, who manage over 20 outdoor facilities. This is a job for those who enjoy working outside and getting their "hands dirty". Experience is a plus, but enthusiasm and willingness to learn are more important.
Outdoor Recreational Facilities - Supervisor - FWS #3532 A key member of the Outdoor Facility Management team who helps facilitate great experiences at Fred Beekman Park and other outdoor recreation facilities. Helps guests with equipment needs and keeps the facility in great condition. May promote to Facility Manager position.
Recreation Maintenance Assistant - FWS #3530 Assists department maintenance superintendent in all facets of maintaining recreation facilities and equipment. This is an excellent opportunity to learn mechanical skills.
RPAC Audio-visual Aide - FWS #4846 Provides full service audiovisual support and technical assistance to groups using facility space at the Recreation Physical Activity Center. Responsible for on-site set-up, operation, tear-down of basic audio, video, projection, and computer equipment. This includes, but is not limited to: Sound systems/Mixers, Microphones, LCD Projectors, Computers (PowerPoint, WiFi, Internet), Televisions, VCR's, DVD players. Assist with proper security, transportation, storage, maintenance, and inventory of all equipment. Provide recommendation for repair of damaged equipment and purchasing of new equipment.
RPAC Fitness Center Supervisor - FWS #3524 Provides safety, security and customer service in various conditioning/weight training environments in RPAC. Cleans, maintains and inspects equipment. Checks patron identification. Enforces time limits on equipment and other facility policies. May promote to supervisory position.
RPAC Recreation Supervisor - FWS #3525 (Must have federal work study) Provides for the safety, security, and cleanliness of RPAC. Great people skills and a desire to provide excellent customer service in a fun and healthful environment are necessary. This person inspects, maintains, and sets up sports facilities for special events. Enforces departmental policies. May promote to supervisory position.
RPAC Sport Shop Assistant - FWS #3526 (Must have federal work study) Supervises locker rooms and equipment check-out areas in RPAC. Provides for the safety, security, and customer service of patrons.
RPAC Welcome Center Assistant - FWS #3521 (Must have federal work study) Staffs the front counter, customer service and cash register. The student answers phones, disseminates information, issues facility membership and guest passes, registers participants for a variety of other recreation programs. The student will occasionally lead facility tours. Responsible for a large amount of daily cash flow and works independently under little supervision.
Sport Club Assistant - FWS #3546 (must have Federal Work Study) Assists with the day-to-day administration of the sport club programs. Maintains files, creates data base of participants, performs public relations functions, coordinates sport club projects. Other opportunities in writing and web page management available. May promote to supervisory position.
